So many times we have seen the practicing alcoholic helped over a period of months and even years and, each time someone labored over him, they were rewarded by failure after failure. Surely the Twelve Stepper has done his very best. It was apparent that this guy just didn’t want it or he was so far down the ladder he couldn’t be helped.

Intelligence or common sense would say drop him flat. Yet there is hardly a group today that does not number among its regulars one or more people of this type. These men owe their present sobriety to the fact their sponsors had more heart than brains.
