FR. LEO'S DAILY MEDITATION #essentialsofrecovery

REASON

For here we are not afraid to follow wherever it may lead, or to tolerate error so long as reason is free to combat it.”

~ Thomas Jefferson ~

As an alcoholic, I was often afraid to challenge the thinking and ideas of other people. My people-pleasing demanded peace at any price. Yet I did not agree with so much of what I heard, read, and practiced. Now I see that my attitude and behavior—along with my alcohol consumption—kept me sick.

In my spiritual program, I am free to reject, consider, and have my own opinions in life. I do not have to agree with everything that is said. In this way, I am discovering my value and self-esteem.

Lord, I am grateful for the freedom to cooperate.

The Eye Opener #essentialsofrecovery

Our reason is the creator of all our conditions of life, whether they be legitimate or illegitimate. We think ourselves into stormy and turbulent living just as surely as we think ourselves into peace and serenity.

Our stinking drinking was as much a product of our stinking thinking as was our stinking thinking the result of our stinking drinking.

Father Leo’s Daily Meditation #essentialsofrecovery

REASON

“I do not feel obliged to believe that the same God who has endowed us with sense, reason and intellect has intended us to forego their use.”

–Galileo Galilei

An essential part of being human is the ability to think, reflect and reason. Spirituality is involved in our ideas and perceptions because that is historically how man has grown and been able to change. As Descarte said, “Cogito ergo sum – I think therefore I am.”

The tragedy is that few people experience the freedom to think and create because of the stifling addictions that are epidemic in our society: food, alcohol, drugs, religion, work, money and sex. We are so afraid of what others might think or say that we never fully experience our spiritual selves and everybody suffers. It is the “risks” in life that make man great.

Help me to challenge what I do not believe in order to discover what I do believe.
