Watch your Step!

Keep they foot when thou goest to the house of God, and be more ready to hear, than to give the sacrifice of fools; for they consider not that they do evil. Ecclesiastes 5:1

This chapter, from which the above verse is taken, is really a treatise on the art of living; and here in the first verse the Bible writer sums up his message.

He begins by saying, "Keep thy foot," which is a strange expression to us. Nowadays we would say, "Watch your step," but as with all the Bible teaching there is an inner meaning too. The foot, in the Bible, stands for spiritual understanding, and so to "keep thy foot" means to maintain your spiritual understanding.

"To go to the house of God" does not mean merely to go into a particular church or building. You go to the house of God when you remember that God is also present, no matter where you may be. So the Bible writer says, in effect, that if you maintain your spiritual understanding and remember that God is present where you are, you will be "more ready to hear"--to receive your revelation or inspiration from God.

"To give the sacrifice of fools" is to accept things because someone else has told you rather than to get your inspiration direct from God. "For they consider not that they do evil" means that man's thoughts are often negative, and negative thoughts can only bring trouble in their wake.

To sum it up, we are told in this verse that if we want to be successful in life, to have spiritual understanding, and direct inspiration from God Himself, we must practice the Presence of God. To listen to any other voice than His can only be a snare and a deceit.
