Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius
St. Ignatius of Loyola was a Spanish saint who discovered or formulated a series of exercises that allowed him the ability to discern between good and evil spirits. This occurred after Siege of Pamplona in 1521. Ignatius was wounded during the siege and stayed with Benedictine monks who introduced him to "Ejercitatoria de la vida espiritual" of Garcia de Cisneros. The spiritual exercises of Saint Ignatius form the basis of Jesuit priesthood.
Bill W. when visiting Fr. Dowling and the Jesuits at Sodality Headquarters was explaining how the twelve steps had come about from things learned from the Oxford groups. Things like self-survey, confession, restitution, helpfulness to others and prayer were necessary fro the alcoholic to live a sober way of life. Bill said that A.A. added the fact that they were powerless over alcohol. Bill was blown away when Fr. Dowling pointed to a chart on the wall which he said was a direct comparison between the Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius and the Twelve Steps. Bill later said the comparison was amazingly exact.
