This kind goeth not out but by prayer and fasting. -Mathew 17:21
There was a man who had an epileptic son, and Jesus' disciples had been unable to heal him. The father in desperation appealed to Jesus and he promptly healed the son. His disciples, seeing this, inquired why they had not been able to do the same. Jesus replied, "because of your unbelief…..this kind goeth not out but by prayer and fasting."
Now, fasting from food is a good thing on occasion, especially for those who have indulged in unwise habits of eating. But Jesus could not have referred to physical fasting, for at another time he said, "It is not that which goeth into the mouth that defileth a man; but that which cometh out of the mouth." In other words, it is not what we eat, but what we think in our hearts and express, that is important.
It is your mental diet that determines the kind of life you live. You must fast from thoughts of fear, anger, resentment, condemnation, and so forth. It is these things that nullify your prayers. When you have thus cleansed your mind by this kind of fasting, you have begun to give all power to God--and, of course, your prayers will then be powerful too.
So long as you harbor thoughts of lack and limitation, your power in prayer will not be great, but when you fast from these negative things, then will your prayers be answered for yourself as well as for those for whom you pray.
