“Faith is never identical with piety.”
~ Karl Barth
Drugs created a world of fantasy rather than a life of reality. Everything was exaggerated and dehumanized, especially my practice of spirituality. For the addict, religion often becomes part of the escape. Ritual may become theatrical, leading one to expect magic rather than a miracle. Icons are worshipped, promises are made, confessions become routine, prayers are mouthed, and God is manipulated.
Piety, the religious art of showmanship, kept me prisoner to a small god. Faith, on the other hand, takes my pain and isolation seriously and promises recovery only when I change and accept responsibility. I must walk my prayers and live my rituals!
God, build Your temple in my heart, Your altar on my love of self and others.
