“A good scare is worth more to us than good advice.”
~ Ed Howe
My fear of alcoholism helped move me into treatment. My awareness of reality—”I am an alcoholic”—helped me move toward recovery. I was literally scared into healing! I must never forget my frightening yesterdays because doing so could easily lead to minimization and tomorrow’s denial. I need to remember my pain if I am to gain. My inappropriate behavior, my abuse of self and others, and my feelings of self- loathing should be reckoned with, on a daily basis, because they are only one drink away!
God has given me a memory, and I need to use it. My spiritual courage is in remembering my yesterdays so I can continue to enjoy my sobriety today.
May I recognize that healthy fear comes from You; it is part of Your love for me.
