   1892 -  British Open Men's Golf, Muirfield: Harold Hilton wins by 3 shots from amateur John Ball, Sandy Herd & Hugh Kirkaldy

1926 - Gene Tunney beats Jack Dempsey in 10 for heavyweight boxing title.

1950 - Nobel peace prize awarded to Ralph Bunche for mediation in Israel - 1st African American winner.

1957-  "That'll Be the Day" by Buddy Holly and the Crickets reaches #1.
